The controlling power of appetite

will prove the ruin of thousands, when, if they had conquered on this point, they would have had moral power to gain the victory over every other temptation of Satan. But those who are slaves to appetite will fail in perfecting Christian character.” (3T 491.003) Throughout the Bible we see God’s people fasting; Cornelius for spiritual insight, the early church for Peter’s release from prison, Daniel for greater knowledge of God’s word, and Jesus for my sins and yours. Because of appetite, disease is running rampart today in the church of the Living God because of appetite; Type 2 Diabetes being a prime example.

A recent article in the Journal of Applied Physiology 2005 July 28; showed how intermittent fasting improves the action of insulin in the body resulting in reduced blood glucose (sugar.) Fasting also reduces blood pressure, decreases blood cholesterol and improves digestion. One caution: If you are on medications for type 2 diabetes, you should not take the medications during the fast because of the likelihood of hypoglycemia, blood sugar getting too low.

But you may say, “I cannot fast. It causes me to be sick.” I would suggest that it is because we don’t fast that we are sick and getting sicker. But if you are still hesitant about a total fast, God has that covered also and I would recommend you try this. In Counsel of Diet and Foods page 90.001 we read, “The true fasting which should be recommended to all is abstinence from every stimulating kind of food, and the proper use of wholesome, simple food, which God has provided in abundance.

Men need to think less about what they shall eat and drink, of temporal food, and much more in regard to the food from heaven, that will give tone and vitality to the whole religious experience.” May we seek God’s strength to do His revealed will in our lives that we might glorify Him in our bodies, which are His!

Luke 9:23 – “And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” There are few better ways of denying oneself than by fasting. Controlling appetite is difficult for many and we are told that, “Through the power of appetite Satan has gained control of men and women. How difficult it is to obtain the victory over appetite when once it is established.” (RH.1901-07-09.007) In my experience personally and with my patients, I have never seen fasting fail in helping to regain control over appetite.

When struggling with overeating, God has used a 24-48 hour fast with prayer, (you will pray when you fast, especially when those hunger pang hits), to give me control and victories. So for those who desire physical and spiritual victories try fasting, and “watch God work.” Remember the promise, “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Cor. 15:57 (Note: Please consult with you doctor if you have any health or medical problems before you begin your fast.)
