THE PROBLEM WITH FISH!

A plethora of studies suggest that eating fish is very beneficial. The question, "what do you say about eating fish," is repeatedly asked during health seminars. Christ served and ate fish during his ministry and even after His resurrection. So there is no inherent problem with fish or Christ would not have provided or eaten it ! The problem is with water pollution . God has instructed His people, "In many places fish become so contaminated by the filth on which they feed as to be a cause of disease. This is especially the case where the fish come in contact with the sewage of large cities. The fish that are fed on the contents of the drains may pass into distant waters and may be caught where the water is pure and fresh. Thus when used as food they bring disease and death on those who do not suspect the danger." (MH 314)

•  "A Canadian biologist, Ron Sonstegard, has examined bottom-dwelling fish in the Great Lakes and the rivers that feed them. In every fish species he has found tumors-often malignant ones. For example, 30 percent of the bullheads in Lake Erie had liver cancer. The Ph.D. nutritionist and author, Dr. Winston Craig, in commenting on these findings, added three more sobering facts: (1) the Great Lakes situation is not unique: problems with cancerous fish have turned up from Puget Sound to the Gulf of California and from the Hudson River to the Florida Keys; (2) National Cancer Institute data show an increased death rate from cancer among people living in areas where fish have exceptionally large amounts of tumors; (3) the toxic nature of what is found in some of our waterways is astonishing: when sediments from the bottom of Lake Erie were painted on the skin of mice, the mice developed skin cancers. Although Craig's insights may not necessarily prove human risk, they surely raise serious concerns about the human health hazards from the "epidemic" of cancers in fish." (Nedley, Neal; Proof Positive p. 118)

•  "Dr. Craig has pointed out another serious concern with fish safety. There is no government mandatory inspection program for fish or fish products at this writing. Craig states that only about 10 percent of fish undergo any type of inspection, and this is through a voluntary program. Obviously, there is need for a well-ordered inspection system for fish that has just not taken place." (Proof Positive p. 119)

•  "Dr. Michael Jacobson of the Center for Science in the Public Interest indicates that farm-raised fish are not free from concern. Based on his research, he has highlighted several issues: (1) food coloring has illegally been added to feed to make farmed fish look more attractive to consumers; (2) antibiotics are routinely used in the fish farming industry; (3) pesticides have also been applied by aqua-culturists; (4) farm-raised fish may have lower omega-3 levels due to differences in their feed." (Proof Positive p. 122)

So don't be fooled by all the misinformation being disseminated. God has given us insight, which may save our lives. Remember, " Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams." (1 Sam. 15:22) May God give you grace to do His will.
